Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden is a real beer garden, but many of its imitators are not.
Yet another media source in New York has fallen victim to the mistaken definition of “beer garden.” As we’ve noted before, just because you can drink beer outside doesn’t make a place a beer garden. In addition, just because a bar has a German theme and serves German beer doesn’t make it a beer garden. In an article yesterday, the New York Times either didn’t bother researching the definition of a beer garden, or ignored the definition to write a phony “trend piece.”
By definition, a beer garden (taken from the German “biergarten”) is a ground-level, open-air space where beer and food are served. The concept actually originated as Bavarian breweries planted gardens above cellars to keep their lagers cool enough to ferment underground. More entrepreneurial breweries turned these spaces into outdoor spaces with communal seating that serve beer and traditional food.
Based on that definition, here are the fifteen places that the Times mentioned in their article, and which ones are actually beer gardens.
Just bought 10 jugs of rum. Jack Sparrow would be proud.
Reblog this if you like really good music.
A few weeks ago, California based Baths stripped down LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends” over at The AV Clubs’ Undercover Series. He transformed the unstoppable dance anthem into a quiet, nostalgic and minimalist track.

The Antlers — No Widows (Live at NPR’s SXSW Showcase)
There’s no doubt Apple (AAPL) and its runaway success with the iPad are taking a bite out of the laptop market. But for some folks, the flash of a tablet isn’t worth the expense, and the comfortable old click of a keyboard is just plain faster for writing longer documents.
That’s why Apple’s Silicon Valley competitor Google (GOOG) is pushing forward with an ambitious plan to offer ultra-cheap laptops using its Chrome operating system. The gadgets go on sale for as little as $349.
But the real sales potential, according to a rumor first reported by Forbes, is that the Chrome laptop — complete with Internet access can — be “rented” for just $20 a month.
I would be more excited about a hype machine iPhone app if it wasn’t worth $2.99.

Been trying to export a PDF from indesign so that it’s less than 5MB … I keep getting closer and closer but now all the damn images look crappy.
Fun times.
